Bangladesh is formally known as The People's Republic Of Bangladesh. It is located in southern Asia, in the Tropic of Cancer, and is bordered by India on the north, east and west and the Bay of Bengal to the south. |
Political History
Modern Bangladesh gained independence in the Bangladesh Liberation War against Pakistan. With the support of India, southern Pakistan became Bangladesh in 1971. After Bangladesh claimed their independence, they proclaimed a secular parliamentary democracy. The President, Abdul Hamid, is the head of state. Although the real power is held by the Prime Minister, who is the head of government. The current Prime Minister is Sheikh Hasina, leader of the Bangladesh Awami League, who was appointed on the 6th of January 2009. |
This 147,570 square kilometer country is home to over 160 million people, making it one of the world's most densely populated countries, and has the eighth-largest population in the world. The capital, Dhaka, is located in central Bangladesh and has one of the strongest workforces in the world. Bangladesh's economy is driven by their garment industry and is the world's second largest apparel exporter. |
